Operating Modes

The Doosan GridTech Intelligent Controller™ (DG-IC™) features a suite of operating modes that enables utilities to solve problems associated with the integration of renewables and other distributed energy resources (DER) into the electrical grid.

Our operating modes employ powerful, extensible algorithms that support smooth integration of DER such as wind and solar, while enabling our customers to fine-tune their storage resources for efficient, economical operations under changing grid, power generation, and marketplace conditions. Intelligently-controlled energy storage extends the life of older equipment, can reduce outages, and avoids the need for costly peaker plants.

Peak Power Limiting mode responds to real power levels anywhere on the grid, driving the charging or discharging of the ESS to transcend system bottlenecks, and meet peaks in demand.

Intelligently-controlled energy storage avoids last-minute energy purchases by deploying power to defend the forecast of load against actual load.

Forecast Assurance mode responds to a forecast of power use and real power levels anywhere on the grid, driving charging or discharging of the ESS to avoid high-cost energy purchases.

For Solar with Energy Storage Systems…

Intelligently-controlled solar with energy storage prevents voltage surges from too much sun.

Volt/Watt mode responds to voltage levels anywhere on the grid, driving the charging or discharging of the ESS to maintain voltage within the specified band.

Intelligently-controlled solar with energy storage limits power swings from sun to cloud to sun.

Power Smoothing mode responds to real power levels anywhere on the grid, driving the charging or discharging of the ESS to maintain voltage within the specified band.

Intelligent Operating Modes Work Together…

The DG-IC can apply certain algorithms simultaneously. For example, these three modes can be engaged at the same time:

  • Limited Watts – caps the real power output of the ESS
  • Power Following – drives the real power output of the ESS in response to demand on a sub-circuit
  • Power Factor Correction – drives reactive power output of the ESS in response to power factor readings anywhere on the grid.

Spinning Reserves mode employs two sub-algorithms in a specified hierarchy:

Its first priority is to apply Frequency Correction to maintain frequency within limits by charging or discharging the ESS.

Its second priority is SOC Maintenance, restoring the batteries in the ESS to a target state of charge (when they are not needed for Frequency Correction).
