Tampa Electric Selects Doosan GridTech as System Integrator and Supplier for its 100MW/200MWh Wave 1 Battery Energy Storage System Portfolio

September 13, 2023

Tampa Electric (TECO), an Emera Company, has selected Doosan GridTech to supply and integrate TECO’s Wave 1 Battery Energy Storage System portfolio with a capacity of 100MW/200MWh across Florida.

As part of TECO’s commitment to seek cleaner and greener lower carbon-emitting assets, the portfolio of resource additions provides cost savings, environmental, and reliability benefits for customers, enhancing the system’s operational flexibility, energy diversity, and resiliency.

Doosan GridTech is responsible for furnishing, designing, commissioning, and programming a complete Li-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for three separate sites in Florida. These distributed resources provide peaking capacity and fuel savings and have the potential to provide system operational benefits. All three systems are expected to come online in 2025.

The BESS will be controlled by the Doosan GridTech Intelligent Controller® (DG-IC®) ̶ one of the first software control systems built on open standard interfaces. The DG-IC is an extensible artificial intelligence energy management platform for battery energy storage and hybrid power systems. Its fully flexible, precise programming delivers safe, reliable control and optimization with rapid response to real-time changing conditions. Other system components include Gotion’s containerized liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries and SMA’s power conversion system.
